Reimagining Search: Enhancing Usability in Security Video Management

front cover

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project focused on redesigning the search feature of a video management application to enhance usability and increase engagement. By transitioning from a list-based layout to a grid-based interface, the new design enables users to quickly view and compare camera footage, streamlining the process of identifying relevant events. The redesign was informed by user insights, emphasizing efficiency, clarity, and ease of navigation.

THE PROBLEM

After launching the app, I noticed that while users appreciated the overall experience, the search feature was underutilized. I investigated, spoke to stakeholders, and discovered the following problems:

  • list-based search results made it challenging for users to quickly find and compare relevant footage.
  • Going from the list to individual cameras disrupted the search experience, especially having to go back and forth between the two.
  • Users preferred scrubbing through footage to find relevant motion and events.

OUTCOME

We decided to re-design the search experience, improving the search results by adding a grid based camera layout where users can scrub through the footage, which adds an extra layer of context for the customer while investigating.

  • The design was well received by sales and is currently undergoing development for the release in March!
